We did not have much choice in disposable tableware, until recent years. If you do not mind spending a little extra for the sake of elegance, go for disposables made of PET materials. They come in shapes and designs that brilliantly imitate ceramic or glass. This is a better choice for conferences, trade fairs etc. or for gatherings where the attendees are mostly older people.

If you are a hard-core environmentalist or the event or its organizers have something to do with environment-friendliness, stick to biodegradable or compostable products. Disposable producers specifically mention if the products are cent per cent biodegradable.

Higher level of hygiene is another advantage of using disposable food containers. They are also very easy to handle and transport since they are lightweight and compact, making them ideal for camping or picnics, as well.
